Prague has an excellent public transport system, and getting around the city is easy and affordable.
The Prague Integrated Transport system (PID) includes the metro, trams, buses, trolleybuses, trains and selected ferries. For most visitors, you will only need a simple 30-minute, 90-minute, 24-hour or 72-hour ticket.
The ticket is valid for the specified time and allows you to change between metro, trams, buses and other participating PID services during its validity. For most tourists, the 90-minute ticket is a good choice for a journey across Prague, while the 24-hour or 72-hour ticket is convenient if you plan to use public transport frequently.
The 30- and 90-minute tickets are not valid on the Petřín funicular.
A separate funicular ticket costs 100 CZK, or 90 CZK when purchased through the PID Lítačka app. The 24- and 72-hour Prague tickets can be used on the Petřín funicular when it is operating.
Open the PID Lítačka app.
Select Tickets.
Choose Buy a ticket.
Select Prague and the required ticket.
Pay by card.
Activate the ticket before you start your journey.
Wait until the ticket is fully active before entering the metro paid area or boarding public transport.
Important: An app ticket is not valid simply because you have purchased it. If you choose manual activation, activate it before travelling.
PID recommends activating the ticket at least 60 seconds before the planned journey. For the metro, you must have a fully active ticket before entering the paid area.
During a ticket inspection, simply show the QR code generated by the application.
There are several options.
You will find ticket machines:
at metro stations
inside buses and trams
at Prague Airport
at other important transport locations
There are several types of machines.
Contactless ticket machines are particularly convenient for tourists because you can pay by card.
Prague's trams, buses and trolleybuses have contactless payment terminals where you can purchase tickets.
These tickets are valid immediately after purchase and do not need to be stamped.
Paper tickets can also be purchased from PID/DPP information centres and ticket offices.
Tickets are also sold at selected authorised sales points, including some newsstands and other retailers.
For many tourists, this is the easiest and cheapest option.
⚠️ Do You Need to Validate Your Ticket?
Sometimes yes — and this is one of the most important things to understand in Prague.
Paper tickets bought from a standard ticket machine
YES — you must validate them.
When you buy a normal paper ticket from a ticket machine, it is generally not valid until you stamp it.
You must stamp the ticket:
when entering the metro paid area, before entering the platform area, or
immediately after boarding a tram or bus.
Look for the yellow ticket validation machines.
Insert the ticket in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Validate the ticket only once.
The validator prints the date, time and relevant information on the ticket. The validity period starts from that moment.
🚨 Do NOT stamp the same ticket twice
This is extremely important.
A ticket should be validated only once, at the beginning of its first journey.
Stamping it again can damage or invalidate it.
🟢 Which Tickets Do NOT Need Validation?
You do not stamp tickets purchased through:
the PID Lítačka app
contactless ticket terminals inside trams/buses
ticket machines where the ticket already has its validity time printed
railway ticket counters where the ticket's validity is printed
tickets purchased from a driver where applicable
These tickets are already valid according to the time printed or activated electronically.
